Uberscan is the incomparable fine art scanning service offered by Colourgenics. It is comprised of hardware – the German-built Cruse Synchron 285 ST FA – the only scanner of its class in Canada; custom image management solutions for precise, vivid colour; and a set of settings designed to capture various types of original artwork in ultimate detail. Learn more
Flat scanning is perfect for capturing originals where surface detail is irrelevant and/or needs to be suppressed (e.g. when the goal is to de-emphasize strong impasto brush- and knife-work and smoothen texture).
Flat lighting is also appropriate for scanning old, scratched, wrinkled or otherwise damaged materials, since it does an excellent job hiding tears and imperfections. Flat scanning can even be performed on framed art, without dismantling
On the other hand, texture lighting allows for incredibly lifelike captures of original artwork. The angle and intensity of light from each direction can be separately controlled, so that support and medium textures (e.g. canvas patterns, impasto, chalk strokes, etc.) can be revealed in ultimate detail. Unwanted highlights and reflections can be effectively suppressed, even on highly glossy media, heavily varnished pieces, etc.
The prints from texture lighting scans display uncanny realism and, for the lack of a better word: three-dimensionality. Thus, this approach is the best for oil and acrylic on canvas or board, fabrics, mixed media, gouache, pastels or chalks with heavy coverage, collages, etc. Our texture scanning lighting setup can even be successfully used for capturing actual 3D objects up to 6" in height. In fact, we have reported very impressive results scanning wood samples, fabric, leather, circuit boards, jewelry, glass art and on occasion a live body in the past.
There are very few flatbed scanners that can scan originals larger than 11”x17”, and those are usually geared towards engineering/architectural use (i.e. they are neither optimized for colour reproduction nor for high resolution). And drum scanners are designed to scan relatively small pieces of film at very high resolution.
Uberscan, on the other hand, is purpose-built and designed to scan art directly – and to do so with great colour fidelity and even sharpness. This means you won't need to struggle to light and photograph your artwork with a DSLR and, more importantly, it can be pretty much any size.
Our scanning bed is sized to 60" x 90"*, with a weight limitation of 300lbs. The maximum height of a 3D object cannot be more than 15 inches (as that is how high the lights can be raised).
Aside of these limitations there may be issues of depth of field, so please contact us to discuss your project before bringing in the artwork.
This depends on the size of your scan. For example, many of our large-sized artwork clients enjoy large format chromogenic or giclée prints. Please contact us for a free consultation and recommendations.
Uberscan produces digital images in industry-standard TIFF format (available options are: 8 bit RGB, 16 bit RGB and 16 bit grayscale). Scans are delivered in Adobe RGB space. At 500MB, they can be opened by any imaging application on your computer, and can produce anything from a regular chromogenic print to a billboard ad along the side of a building.
Most of the time no preparation is necessary. We usually just recommend trying to keep your artwork flat (very curly originals are hard to handle).
Because of the unique design of the Cruse, it can be programmed to clear reasonably deep ornate frames, therefore precious artwork can be left untouched. Minor cropping may occur due to the slight shadows cast by the thick frame.
For artwork framed under glass, again the cleverly designed Cruse can scan through glass without reflections with the only caveat being the difficulty to programme the height of the original. In such a case, an additional charge may apply.
Similarly, artwork requiring unusual handling may incur extra charges.
The regular turnaround for this service is 2 business days.
We also offer a Shoot-n-Scoot service at a premium so you can get your scan done while you wait.

In general, we recommend submitting your image files as they were edited, typically in the native resolution of your camera. However, some customers prefer to upsize to the output resolution of the printers. In that case, 300 pixels per inch at final size is a common resolution most of our printers can work with. Other attributes include: RGB colour space, 8-bit uncompressed, flattened tif or jpg.
With the exception of our small format chromogenic prints (up to 12x18) whose output colour space closely resembles sRGB, we recommend editing in and embedding the Adobe RGB space for all our other colour managed workflows.
From experience, editing in high bit definitely yields smoother results, but we do not see an advantage in receiving 16-bit files for printing, especially when unwieldy file sizes are to be avoided.
This policy is to protect the customer’s investment in having the prints made. As the delicate mounting process is susceptible to damage or other complications, supplied prints offer no recourse in such an event. Despite our liability limit proclamation, it is in your best interest to safeguard your precious artwork.
